The Project

The unique architecture of this eye-catching development in the regenerated area of Stratford meant that Power On was selected for its design capabilities and flexibility of approach.

Located in the borough of Newham, Stratford is a busy and popular district, especially since much of the area was regenerated for the 2012 Olympic Games. Three Mills West is a 26-storey student accommodation building, for Alumno Developments. The structure is finished with a combination of brickwork and bronze anodized metal cladding to create an aesthetically pleasing weaving pattern on the upper levels.

High Volume

The building consists of 445 rooms, 75 kitchens, common rooms, a café and artist studios. There is also commercial space on the ground floor. Power On provided a 1MVA transformer and 1,600A air circuit breaker to power the development.

Distinctive Challenges

The unique architecture of the Three Mills West development presented restrictions to the substation room. Stage four designs had already been approved and piling commenced, so Power On had to use an innovative design approach and offer a flexible programme, to work within the constraints. Power On’s in-house design team worked closely with HG Construction to develop a bespoke substation delivery and installation package.

  • Electricity

Power On’s responsiveness and willingness to consider bespoke design were key to ensuring that we could build a substation that was safe and adoptable.
