The Project

Despite challenges at excavation, Power On’s forward-thinking approach meant that the project was delivered on time and within budget for the customer.

Friar Lane is a £5.4m new-build contemporary student accommodation development located in the heart of Leicester city centre.

Power On was selected to supply the electricity for this scheme by the project construction partner, Stepnell Limited.

The high-quality five-storey development scheme consists of 90 self-contained studio apartments. Power On installed new off-site HV cabling, 10m in length, a 500kVA substation, which was house integrally, 1No ACB to supply a 315kVA LV metered supply, and a secondary supply for a sprinkler pump set.

During the excavation for the point of connection we came across an Anglian burial ground. The team discovered bones in the highway which meant an archaeologist was called onto the site to collect and examine the remains. This led to a delay in the scheme, beyond anyone’s control. After three weeks the team was given permission to start excavating again but with a watching brief from the archaeologist to ensure we didn’t come across further remains.

Richard White, Building Services Manager at Stepnell Limited said: “This project hasn’t been without its trials but the Power On team really stepped up. Despite the challenges faced during excavation, Power On still delivered on time and on budget, thanks to the team’s dynamic and forward-thinking approach”.
