The West Coventry Academy

Client:Bowmer + Kirkland
Sector:Public Sector

The Project

The West Coventry Academy, which has undergone a £39m rebuild, is a shining example of sustainable construction. It is considered a ‘super green school’, designed to achieve net zero emissions, and provide a top tier learning environment. Bowmer + Kirkland delivered this innovative project in just two years. It is part of the government-funded School Rebuilding Programme and West Coventry Academy is one of ten pioneering net-zero carbon schools in the country.

Robust Infrastructure

Power On, over a 14-month period, played a crucial role in providing a robust electrical infrastructure to power the Academy. Their installation included a new 1000kVA substation on-site, equipped with a 1000kVA LV metered ACB supply. To ensure a seamless power supply, approximately 575m of 11kV cabling was implemented from an off-site Point of Connection (PoC), located 440m away from the site boundary.

Community Integration

To minimise disruption to the residents, Power On collaborated closely with the local Highway Authority to efficiently execute off-site works. This commitment to community integration demonstrated our dedication to responsible project management.

Seamless Delivery

The expertise, collaborative approach, and unwavering dedication of the Power On project team on site ensured a smooth delivery. With a single point of contact throughout the design and construction phases, clear and constant communication ensured that the Academy’s electrical infrastructure was not only functional and delivered on time and within budget, but also seamlessly aligned with its sustainable vision.

Powering Progress

The West Coventry Academy now stands as a net-zero carbon-in-operation building. It offers a high-performing acoustic environment flooded with natural light, creating an optimal learning space and experience for both staff and students. Powering this flagship school and the community it serves represents a significant stride towards a greener and more sustainable future for public sector buildings.

  • Electricity

I was very pleased with the communication from the Design and Construction leads throughout the build out of this scheme and for Power On's support in getting a challenging project over the line.
