Networked Ground Source Heat Pumps

Networked Ground Source Heat Pumps are an effective, future-proof solution for low-carbon heating, hot water and cooling in apartments and multi-building developments.
Our networked systems deliver around 80% lower carbon emissions from day one, exceeding Future Homes Standard requirements, while providing reliable comfort and reducing demand on the electricity grid.
They are scalable and adaptable to different site layouts and heat demands. And as the UK electricity grid continues to decarbonise, your heat network will become progressively lower carbon over time – with no additional retrofit work or cost.
Let’s discuss your project – our experts can help design a networked heat solution tailored to your site.

How do Networked Ground Source Heat Pumps work?
A Networked Ground Source Heat Pump is a renewable heating system that extracts low-temperature solar energy stored in the ground.
Thermal transfer fluid, pumped through a single, underground closed loop system of pipework, carries the heat to multiple homes.
In each home, compact heat pumps compress the heat from the warmed fluid to a higher temperature before transferring it to the home’s individual heating and hot water system.

What are the key benefits of Networked Ground Source Heat Pumps?
High energy efficiency
For every 1 kWh of electricity used, the system delivers 3–4 kWh of renewable energy – making it the most energy- and carbon-efficient heating technology currently available. Because the ground temperature remains stable throughout the year, performance is consistent even at peak winter demand. This efficiency reduces energy consumption, lowers running costs, and eases pressure on the local grid.
Cost-saving
For developers, the cost per plot is lower than individual air source solutions, with no need for costly grid reinforcements. For residents, bills are typically 20% lower compared to individual air source heat pumps. A simple monthly Community Heat Charge delivers stable, predictable heat and hot water costs with no seasonal variations or cold weather premiums.
Low carbon from day one
These systems deliver up to 80% lower carbon emissions immediately, helping developments exceed Future Homes Standard targets from the outset. As the grid decarbonises, they will automatically transition to zero carbon without any additional investment, upgrades or retrofits. This future-proofs developments against upcoming regulations and supports the UK’s net zero goals.
Reliability & long-lasting
Heat pumps have a 25-year design life, and the underground infrastructure can last up to 100 years – significantly longer than most conventional heating systems. This reduces the need for replacements or upgrades, making it a low-maintenance, future-proof solution for developers and residents alike.
Optional passive cooling
The same ground source network can provide passive cooling in summer at minimal capital cost and zero additional running cost for residents. This low-carbon, energy-efficient alternative to traditional air conditioning requires no extra It supports Part O compliance and helps keep homes comfortable as UK summers get hotter.
Compact and quiet
The heat pump units are installed indoors and are among the smallest available on the market, designed specifically for apartment living. With no outdoor fans or visible infrastructure, they preserve outdoor and balcony space and don’t alter the look of the building. Quiet operation inside the apartment creates a comfortable living environment without noise disruption.
Why use Power On?
We are your trusted multi-utility one-stop-shop provider. We take care of it all – from bespoke design of your heat network to build, installation, ongoing maintenance and operation.
For developers, we make sure the process of installing a Networked Ground Source Heat Pump system is straightforward and efficient:
- The system’s high-efficiency performance means you won’t need any more site-wide electricity capacity or network than you would for gas-heated apartments.
- We coordinate with groundworkers to install shared boreholes at an early stage in your project.
- We install the heat network in the site’s utility trench and house service connections are called-off like any other utility service.
- We install the heat pumps and our sister company, Metropolitan, takes on the seamless adoption of the network.
- Metropolitan will manage the on-going provision of heat and hot water to all apartments and buildings on site
